A state of the art, £4m, 16-bed facility for adults with learning disabilities within Neath Port Talbot. Burroughs acted as Civil and Structural Engineers from project inception with the Dragon Research Unit Wales and the Client, Neath Port Talbot CBC and then for the successful Contractor under a Design and Build Contract.
Burroughs were instrumental in highlighting risks associated with existing sea defences. As a result, the project was undertaken in tandem with works to the sea defence. A Flood Consequence Report, completed by Burroughs, highlighted the risk of flooding associated with wave overtopping and a combination of ground floor level rise and soft defences incorporated into the landscape were implemented.
A novel reinforced concrete structural solution was developed to overcome the robustness issues associated with function and location and to facilitate the complicated geometry of the building form.
