Burroughs Emerging Professionals Support Rare Fungi Conservation at Lisvane & Llanishen Reservoirs

04/02/2025

As part of the ACE Emerging Professionals Group, three Burroughs team members Shane Lee, Jay Ford, and Abdillahi volunteered at Lisvane and Llanishen Reservoirs on 16th October 2024, contributing to ongoing conservation efforts led by Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water.

The focus of the day was the preservation of rare waxcap fungi, which thrive in nutrient-poor environments and are found along the reservoir embankments, a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Some waxcap species are classified as vulnerable to extinction – sharing the same conservation status as the snow leopard.

To maintain the fungi’s ideal habitat, the team assisted in raking and removing grass cuttings, a process that prevents soil enrichment and mimics traditional grazing. Alongside hands-on conservation work, Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water rangers provided valuable ecological insights, deepening the volunteers’ appreciation for the unique biodiversity of the site.

This initiative reflects Burroughs’ commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship, with our emerging professionals actively contributing to projects that protect and enhance the natural world.

A huge thank you to Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water and ACE Emerging Professionals for the opportunity to be involved in such a meaningful initiative!
