Anaerobic Digester

PROJECT SCOPE

Syrus Energy, working in conjunction with Renewable Energy Investment Fund, Downing, has developed an Anaerobic Digester facility on the outskirts of Cardigan, West Wales. Burroughs acted as Civil Engineering Designer, Contract Administrator and Project Monitor (for Downing) on the scheme.

Anaerobic digestion is the national breakdown of organic materials into methane and carbon dioxide gas and fertiliser. Anaerobic digestion typically takes place within sealed vessels, in which bacteria act without oxygen. Biogas is formed during the anaerobic digestion of organic waste and following the removal of carbon dioxide from this biogas, the methane remaining is a renewable natural gas. This natural gas is burned in a gas engine to generate electricity, some of which is used to power the plant and the remainder is sold to the electric grid.

The project was a complex green energy industrial scheme requiring the integration of some 40 separate contracts. The scheme delivered the target G59 feed-in tariff date.
