Newport Dock – Waste to Energy

PROJECT SCOPE

Burroughs played a crucial role as the civil and structural design consultants for the Newport Dock Waste to Energy Project, a substantial initiative with a 220,000 tonnes per annum capacity.

Our design responsibilities encompassed all below-ground assets, including surface, foul, and process water drainage networks, piled foundations, reinforced concrete (RC) foundation slabs, RC detailing, access roads, and pavement design. This ambitious project aimed to create a Waste to Energy plant, utilising refuse-derived fuel to generate energy.

The site, located within the Associated British Ports land at Newport Dock, presented several unique challenges. These challenges included challenging ground conditions characterised by a high-water table, contaminated land, and the presence of unexploded ordnance, making it a particularly complex and demanding project.

Working collaboratively with Harris Pye, WSP, and Remedy Geotechnics, we embraced this challenge positively and collaboratively, focusing on meticulous pre-tender and detailed design phases to ensure the project’s success.
