Poortown Quarry is owned and operated by the Isle of Man Government and is the Island’s single source of roadstone grade aggregate. Set against a contentious planning history, which stretched back to the early 1990s, Burroughs was instrumental in the successful development and implementation of a large scheme yielding significant operational and environmental improvements to the Quarry.
Burroughs acted as Engineer and Employer’s Agent for the development and led the re-working of development plans for the Quarry and, in doing so, successfully secured planning permission for the development of the site.
Fixed location processing plant was replaced by mobile crushing and screening equipment yielding environmental and operational benefits; a new cleaner more efficient coating plant was installed to produce bituminous products; a new highway entrance and internal one-way routing system was designed and implemented with operational and safety benefits; enhanced screening and bunding of the Quarry yielded landscape and visual impact benefits; a new water processing and drainage system generated quality discharge improvements.
