In collaboration with our client, Morrison Energy Services and Pulse Clean Energy, Burroughs developed the highways and drainage civil engineering elements of a new grid stabilisation facility in Upper Boat, Pontypridd, South Wales. With construction starting in 2024, this complex project involves transport, delivery and installation of significant electrical infrastructure including synchronous condensers, transformers and switch gear on vehicles up to 65m in length.
Our scope includes discharging a number of planning conditions which include the design for a temporary haul route for the transportation of approximately 250 tonnes of electrical infrastructure. The transportation of this infrastructure will be one of the largest abnormal movements recorded on Welsh roads, with the transport navigating some of Wales’ key roads before accessing the Upper Boat site. Burroughs has devised innovative solutions to ensure the transport can safely access the site.
Our remit also encompasses highways geometric design and spatial confirmation for the main condenser site and the Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) to meet the conditions of the SuDS Approval Body (SAB).
The site is located on a parcel of land 11m higher than the main highway access point. Our complex earthworks analysis ensures accessibility, undertaking a major cut and fill exercise to achieve desirable gradients for the oversized transport.
Complex utility designs are proposed at the site which required meticulous planning and coordination with multiple stakeholders.
