The Worcester Southern Link Road Phase 4 (SLR4) has been recognised with the BRE Whole Team Award and an ‘Excellent’ Sustainability Performance Rating at the NEC Highways Expo.

The award celebrates the collective achievement of the project team, recognising their commitment to delivering sustainable and resilient infrastructure.

Burroughs were proud to act as designers for the scheme, working in a joint venture with COWI , alongside Alun Griffiths (Contractors) Ltd, TACP and Jacobs for Worcestershire County Council.

Phase 4 of the SLR forms the final part of a long-term investment strategy to improve congestion around Worcester. The scheme includes approximately 2km of dualled carriageway and three bridges, including a viaduct over the River Severn at Carrington Bridge.

Burroughs successfully led the team through the planning process and detailed design, with work commencing on site in spring 2019. The project presented several technical challenges, including the River Severn flood environment, a registered battlefield, and proximity to a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).

The full upgrade of the Southern Link Road to dual carriageway standard will significantly enhance east-west connectivity, providing a more reliable route for motorists and helping to ease congestion within Worcester City Centre.

This recognition from BRE highlights the project’s strong sustainability credentials and the value of collaboration between all partners involved.
