DSFRS Training and Washdown Drainage Alterations

PROJECT SCOPE

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service (DSFRS) engaged Burroughs to conduct a comprehensive review and remediation of drainage systems across their entire network of fire stations, aligning them with stringent water authority regulations. Our role, secured through a competitive tender process, encompassed design, project management, cost management, and contract administration.

This project spanned two counties and encompassed 77 fire stations, each equipped with specialised training facilities and vehicle washdown areas, presenting intricate geographical and logistical complexities. The project’s primary design objective was the redirection of all wastewater from vehicle washdown processes and the drainage of Compressed Air Foam (CAFs) used in training exercises to the foul water network. This crucial redesign required trade-effluent agreements with local water authorities, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.

The project was executed under the JCT Intermediate Building Contract, and Burroughs adopted a pragmatic approach by strategically dividing the works into three discrete batches based on geographical location to streamline project management and effectively address the unique challenges posed by the project’s scale and complexity.
