The Airport Runway Project for the Isle of Man Airport was a scheme of international significance, to provide Runway End Safety Areas compliant with new ICAO and CAA recommendations. The project included an extension of the airfield into the Irish Sea, using 40T pieces of rock armour from Norway and over 400,000m3 of dredged infill and the complete refurbishment, reconfiguration, strengthening and resurfacing of the Airport’s main runway.
Burroughs were instrumental in the project, being responsible for initial airfield and marine designs to secure Government capital funding for the project, prior to fulfilling an Employer’s Agent role as the scheme was developed through detailed design and construction. Burroughs were integral to securing planning approval, leading the multi-disciplinary team through planning inquiry and in facilitating the necessary environmental permits and approvals, including the post-construction environmental monitoring.
Burroughs acted as Operational Liaison Officer for the Client, working closely with the Client and the Contractor to ensure that the works were undertaken without any detrimental impact to the Airport’s operations. The project was a resounding success, completed on time and within budget, without detriment to the environment and with an accident frequency rate of zero.
