Keithrow Apron One - Bro Tathan Economic Development Programme

PROJECT SCOPE

In 2019, Burroughs were appointed by the Welsh Government to provide comprehensive programme, project and cost management services, in addition to civil and structural engineering design, for Keithrow Apron One, the initial phase of the Bro Tathan development.

Delivered under the National Procurement Service (NPS) Framework, the project has provided 2,500m2 of flexible hangar space for the Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) of large fixed-wing aircraft, including Boeing 737 and Airbus A320.

Serving as the Designer, Principal Designer, NEC Project Manager, and NEC Supervisor, our designs incorporated several crucial components including a new 800m-long access road leading to the development site, a new service road and internal and external foundation slabs to support the new aircraft hangar, as well as all aspects of Mechanical and Electrical (M&E) design. External aprons were all to Aviation Standard PQ Concrete.

Sustainable urban drainage systems (SuDs) along the access road ensured minimal impact on the existing watercourses. Over 400m pipes, multiple interceptors and swales were used to control surface water flows throughout the site, obtaining full SAB approval.

Burroughs also incorporated modular buildings and lighting into the access road under a separate contract within the South East Wales Technical and Professional Services (SEWTAPS) Collaborative Construction Framework.
