Malvern Technology Park Access Road

PROJECT SCOPE

Burroughs worked as the lead detailed design partner for the main contractor Alun Griffiths (Contractors) Ltd to deliver the Malvern Technology Park Access Road project in Malvern for Worcestershire County Council.

The overall scheme objective was to provide an approximate 1km long new access road to an emerging Technology Park that had obtained Outline Planning permission, with the rearrangement of the existing access to a significant adjacent business Qinetiq, for whom there was very strict and detailed access and security requirements.

The comprehensive multidisciplinary design support covered all aspects of new highway link design including highways and active travel 3D geometry, road safety, earthworks, drainage, road pavement, fencing, kerbing, street lighting, traffic signs and road markings and landscaping.  Developing the 3D highway geometry was particularly complex as well as designing to the national design standards, the levels on both sides of the route were proposed levels either with an adjacent Persimmon Homes site or an early enabling works contract for the Technology Park.  This required Burroughs to lead on extensive and close engagement with these developers to ensure the level of the new access road was seamless with these adjacent developments.

The Interface with the Qinetiq business was also critical to the successful design development that would obtain approval through the onerous Qinetiq governance and approval process.  There security requirements were particularly detailed and required meticulous attention by the Burroughs and AGCL team to ensure the design complied with their requirements and could also be built such that security at the site would be maintained at all times during construction.

The Technology Park Access Road was successfully completed in 2022 with the planning and implementation process now progressing well for plots on the future Technology Park.
