Northern Perimeter Road

PROJECT SCOPE

Burroughs, as Designers for Principal Contractor Alun Griffiths (Contractors) Ltd, undertook the civil engineering design for the new multi-storey car park at Bristol International Airport https://burroughs.co.uk/case_studies/bristol-airport-multi-storey-car-park/  AGCL are in a Joint Venture on the scheme with Farrans. The £60 million capital project will enhance services and accessibility for airport customers. As well as an additional multi-storey car park within the airport estate, the new structure and associated infrastructure includes as a new public transportation interchange hub, a glazed bridge link, waiting areas, rest facilities, and an expanded drop-off/pick-up zone.

AGCL have recently successfully completed the 1.2-Kilometre Northern Perimeter Road, which represents a key project milestone.

The Northern Perimeter Road is principally required to carry eastbound traffic exiting the airport as a two-lane, one-way carriageway, running along the airport’s northern boundary with links from the perimeter road to bus traffic utilising the passenger transport hub. However, to ensure the airport parking operates optimally during construction, Burroughs included in the design to run effectively in a number of temporary operational scenarios, including 2-way, 1-way (for each direction) and 1-way multi-Lane (eastbound). This in-built ‘utility design’ affords the client greater flexibility for managing site traffic, to quickly respond to issues and incidents.

During construction, the road temporarily operated as a two-way route to accommodate traffic while works were carried out on the southern airport access road (North Side Road).

The design faced several constraints, including:

  • Minimising the impact on the existing car parks, to preserve operational capacity by providing readily switched operating directions.
  • Minimise drainage impact on the existing surface water network. Kerbs were removed to enable overedge drainage, with surface water captured through the installation of filter drains and soakaways.

Refinement of design levels to utilise the existing carriageway as a pavement foundation (minimising the import of virgin material to site and minimising the removal of material from site, reducing the carbon footprint of the project
