Toronto Close

PROJECT SCOPE

Burroughs are Designers for Alun Griffiths Contractors on a £2.5m scheme jointly for the Environment Agency in collaboration with Worcestershire County Council. It provides flood risk management for Toronto Close, which has a history of flooding due to its location on the Laughern Brook, in close proximity to the River Severn and River Teme.

The site is adjacent to Powick Mill, Britain’s first hydroelectric scheme and a listed building, which influenced the design and planning.

In recent times, Toronto Close has flooded in 2007 and in 2020 during Storm Dennis, with residents having to be evacuated from properties.

The scheme comprises of strengthening existing walls, providing raised flood embankments, and flood gates to maintain access while protecting the area.

Works commenced on site in 2023 for completion in 2024.
